Originally based in Minneapolis, Shantz Theatre is a not-for-profit non-equity theatre company now calling Chicago home. Currently in our eighth season, Shantz Theatre is dedicated to producing original works that explore the human condition through humor and by stretching the traditional notions of narrative storytelling. A veteran of many Fringe Fests across the country and famous for their wildly successful and critically acclaimed holiday sketch shows, Shantz Theatre has been named a finalist in the Guthrie Theatre’s Fringe Encore program, is a two-time grant recipient from the Illinois Arts Council, and has been Recommended by The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Suntimes, Chicago Magazine, MetroMix, RedEye, Going Chicago, The Kansas City Star, City Pages, Nuvo, The Daily Herald, New City Chicago, and Midwestbusiness.com…that’s right, Midwestbusiness.com…twice.

Along with producing original plays, Shantz Theatre also develops plays and playwrights through the Shantz Theatre Reading Series.  Selected plays receive several rehearsals with professional actors and directors, and a public staged reading with a post-show discussion with audience and artists. All plays selected for the Reading Series are automatically then considered for future production.
